At Family Dentistry of Lakeland, we have designed the new patient visit to be thorough, welcoming, and completely focused on you. We take the time to review your health history, walk you through every step, and make sure you leave with a clear picture of your oral health and a plan to support it.
New patient appointments are approximately two hours. That time is yours, and we use every minute of it intentionally. Here is what we cover.
Welcome and Health History
We start by getting to know you. Our team will review your medical and dental history before the exam begins. Please bring a list of any medications, vitamins, or supplements you are currently taking, along with dosages. This helps us deliver care that is informed and safe.
Comprehensive Exam and Screenings
This is the core of your first visit. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research notes that a thorough oral exam can also reveal early signs of broader health conditions, which is one reason we take this step seriously. Our comprehensive exam includes digital X-rays, periodontal screening to evaluate gum health, oral cancer screening, and a full charting of your existing dental work. Our advanced technology allows us to be precise and efficient throughout.
Cleaning
Depending on what we discover during your exam and how much time remains, we may begin a preventative care cleaning during your first visit. If your gums need additional attention, we will discuss the right type of cleaning for your specific situation and schedule accordingly. We would rather take the right approach than rush one.

If you have questions about insurance coverage before your visit, we are happy to help you sort that out ahead of time.
We make it easy to stay on top of your appointment. After booking, you will receive a save-the-date confirmation, a reminder two weeks before your visit, a reminder three days before your visit, and a final reminder one hour before your visit.
Our only ask in return is 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. This small courtesy allows us to offer that time to another patient who may need care.
