Dentures In Lakeland, FL

Losing teeth affects far more than appearance. It changes how a person chews, how they speak, how they hold the shape of their face, and in many cases, how comfortable they feel in social situations. Dentures remain one of the most widely used and clinically effective solutions for replacing missing teeth, and when they are well-made and properly fitted, they restore a level of function and confidence that significantly improves daily life.

At Family Dentistry of Lakeland, we provide custom-fitted dentures as part of our prosthodontics services for patients throughout Lakeland, FL and Polk County. A 2024 study published in the National Library of Medicine surveyed 500 complete denture patients aged 50 and above and found a significant association between patient satisfaction with dentures and improved oral health-related quality of life across physical, psychological, and social dimensions. Dr. Maneesha Chigurupati and our team approach every denture case with the attention to fit, function, and aesthetics that produces outcomes patients are genuinely satisfied with.

Types of Dentures We Provide

Not every patient needs the same type of denture. Our team evaluates each patient’s situation — the number of missing teeth, the health of any remaining teeth, the condition of the gum tissue and bone, and the patient’s overall goals — and recommends the option that best fits their needs.

Complete dentures replace all of the teeth in one or both arches. They rest on the gum tissue and are held in place through suction, the natural contours of the arch, and for lower dentures, the tongue and cheeks. Complete dentures are an option for patients who have lost all of their teeth or who have remaining teeth that are not viable for long-term retention.

Partial dentures replace several missing teeth when healthy natural teeth remain in the arch. They attach to the remaining teeth using clasps or precision attachments and are removed for cleaning. A partial denture prevents the remaining natural teeth from shifting into the gaps left by the missing teeth while restoring chewing function and appearance.

Implant-supported dentures use dental implants placed in the jawbone to anchor the denture, providing significantly improved stability over conventional removable dentures. This option is available for patients who are good candidates for implant placement and want a solution that does not rely on suction or adhesive. More information is available on our implant-supported dentures page.

What the Process Involves

Denture fabrication begins with comprehensive impressions and bite records that capture the precise dimensions and relationship of the jaws. These records are sent to a dental laboratory where the denture is custom fabricated to fit the individual patient’s anatomy. Multiple try-in appointments allow our team to verify the fit, bite, and appearance before the final denture is completed.

For patients who are having remaining teeth extracted prior to denture placement, immediate dentures can be inserted on the same day as extractions so the patient is never without teeth during healing. Immediate dentures typically require relining or replacement after the tissues have fully healed and reshaped.

Adjusting to Dentures

New dentures require an adjustment period. Minor soreness in the first days or weeks is common as the tissues adapt to the new appliance. Speaking and eating with confidence takes practice and usually improves significantly within a few weeks. Our team schedules follow-up appointments to check the fit and make any adjustments needed to maximize comfort. Patients who experience persistent soreness, difficulty chewing, or changes in fit over time should contact our office rather than tolerating discomfort, as these are usually addressable with simple adjustments or a reline.
