Most parents are surprised to learn that dental care is recommended to begin before a child’s first birthday. The idea of taking a baby to the dentist before they even have a full set of baby teeth can seem unnecessary, but the first dental visit is far less about cleaning teeth and far more about establishing a foundation for health, providing guidance to parents, and identifying any early risk factors that could affect the child’s developing dentition.
At Family Dentistry of Lakeland, we welcome infants and very young children for their first oral health exams as part of our preventive care services throughout Lakeland, FL and Polk County. A systematic review for the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force published in the National Library of Medicine evaluated evidence on dental caries prevention in children younger than five years and supports the value of early oral health screening, preventive interventions including fluoride, and parental education in reducing early childhood caries. Dr. Maneesha Chigurupati and our team provide all of these elements at your child’s first visit.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first dental visit by age one or within six months of the eruption of the first tooth, whichever comes first. Primary teeth can begin erupting as early as four to six months of age, and early childhood caries — cavities in baby teeth — can develop even in infants who are still primarily nursing or bottle-feeding.
Most children do not see a dentist until they are well past this recommended window, and research consistently shows that children who delay their first dental visit are more likely to arrive for that visit with active decay already present. Establishing care early means the first visit is a positive, routine experience rather than an urgent response to a problem.
An infant oral exam is gentle, brief, and designed to be comfortable for both the child and the parent. Our team uses a knee-to-knee position with the parent, which keeps the baby secure and allows a clear view of all erupted and emerging teeth.
During the exam, we assess the health of the gum tissue and any erupted teeth, check for early signs of decay or developmental concerns, evaluate oral habits such as pacifier use and bottle feeding patterns, and review the child’s fluoride exposure. We spend time with the parent discussing feeding practices, when to introduce brushing, teething expectations, and what to watch for as more teeth arrive.
Many of the most important factors in infant oral health are directly influenced by feeding and hygiene habits. We discuss cleaning the gums even before teeth emerge, introducing a soft toothbrush as soon as the first tooth erupts, the risks associated with prolonged nighttime bottle feeding, and how to manage the introduction of fluoride safely based on the family’s water supply.
Parents who receive anticipatory guidance early are better equipped to make decisions that protect their child’s teeth throughout childhood. We approach these conversations without judgment, recognizing that every family’s situation is different. As your child grows, our practice provides children’s cleanings and exams, fluoride treatments, and dental sealants as part of a continuous preventive program from infancy through adolescence.
