Children’s dental health is built one preventive visit at a time. The habits established in early childhood — including regular dental visits, proper brushing technique, and a healthy diet — set the foundation for a lifetime of better oral health outcomes. Early dental care does far more than clean teeth: it creates the opportunity to catch problems early, guide the developing dentition, and help children build a positive relationship with dental care that follows them into adulthood.
At Family Dentistry of Lakeland, we welcome children of all ages for comprehensive exams and professional cleanings as part of our preventive care services throughout Lakeland, FL and Polk County. A 2022 study published in the National Library of Medicine reinforced the recommendation by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry that children establish a dental home by 12 months of age, noting that delay in the first dental visit is one of the primary reasons young children arrive for their first appointment with active decay already present. Dr. Maneesha Chigurupati and our team provide a gentle, positive experience for children at every developmental stage.
A child’s preventive visit begins with a thorough examination. Our team evaluates the health of the gum tissue, checks each tooth for signs of decay or developmental concerns, and assesses bite development and the progression of primary and permanent teeth. We review X-rays at appropriate intervals to identify issues not visible to the naked eye, including developing cavities between teeth and the positioning of teeth that have not yet erupted.
Professional cleaning removes the plaque and tartar buildup that accumulates despite good home care. Our hygienists work at the child’s pace, explaining each step in an age-appropriate way and making the experience as comfortable and reassuring as possible. After the cleaning, fluoride treatment is typically applied to strengthen the enamel and provide additional protection until the next visit.
The AAPD recommends a child’s first dental visit by age one or within six months of the first tooth erupting. Early visits allow our team to evaluate the health of the primary teeth, provide guidance on diet and habits that affect oral health, and help parents understand what to expect as the dentition develops. Beginning visits early also means children become comfortable with the dental office before any treatment is ever needed.
After the first visit, children should return every six months for cleanings and exams. Our team evaluates at each appointment whether a child needs additional preventive services such as dental sealants or fluoride treatment and recommends them when appropriate.
Many adults who have anxiety about dental visits trace it back to early negative experiences. Our team works deliberately to make every child’s appointment calm, positive, and free of pressure. We take the time to let children explore instruments at their own pace, explain what we are doing in child-friendly terms, and involve parents in the conversation throughout. Building trust early makes a meaningful difference in a child’s willingness to maintain regular dental care throughout life. Families with infants just starting out can also review our dedicated page on infant oral health exams to learn what to expect at those very first visits.
